About Us
Incorporated in 2012, Hauteruruku ki Puketeraki Manatōpū is a community and whānau based waka society in Karitāne. The main kaupapa (purpose) of Hauteruruku ki Puketeraki is focused on connecting members & whānau to the awa (river) and moana (ocean) through heritage of kā waka (canoes) and Te Ao Takaroa (the world of Takaroa, atua of the ocean).
This kaupapa is embodied by engaging with these environments using waka unua (double-hulled sailing canoe), waka ama (outrigger canoe) and stand up paddle boards. Learning how to be safe and responsible kaitiaki (guardians) of our beautiful places, waka, and above all else having fun.
Hauteruruku ki Puketeraki Manatōpū is part of a growing movement to strengthen our connection to waka. We regularly find ways to support and connect to other waka based kaupapa, including voyages on waka hauora (Haunui and Hinemoana) and attending Te Hau Kōmaru gatherings.
Our Waka

Hauteruruku is the original waka in our fleet of hand-built waka. He started as a project by Brendan Flack under the Flack whānau home and grew into a community project. Completed in 2010.

Hiwa-i-terangi is our single hull sailing waka. Completed in 2012.

Kuramātakitaki is the newest member of our waka fleet. Launched in early 2025 she is a double hulled waka unua built for coastal voyaging.
